Pont du Garde: A must visit
/Sitting in the shadow of the awe inspiring Pont du Gard, sipping on a ludicrously overpriced glass of Provence Rosé...it's what lifelong memories are made of.
This exceptionally well preserved Aqueduct is a World Heritage Site & is a must visit if you're in the South of France.
Built by the Romans in the first century AD to carry natural spring water from Uzès to the Roman colony in Nimes. It's the highest elevated aqueduct in the world and is simply breathtaking.
It is a little off the beaten track (a good hours drive from most of the major cities in the area like Nimes or Aix) so it's quite hard to get to if you don't have the luxury of a car.
It is also quite expensive, not the the admission but as there's only one car park you are forced to pay for the very expensive car parking.
Having said that it's well worth the cost and effort to see one of the true man made wonder of the world.
Vinotor's tip:
Like any good boy scout be prepared; Remember to take your swimming gear so you can cool down by taking a dip in the crystal clear waters of the River Gardon.
Also put together a little picnic, we kept it simple with a hunk of cheese, a saucisson, a fresh baguette and a bottle of Provence Rose kept chilled in a cooler. This will save you money as the cafe is very expensive (as you'd expect at big tourist attractions).
It will also give the perfect opportunity to sit back and relax on the river beach, enjoying your picnic & glass of rosé whilst gazing up at a giant slice of history.
