Cassis Blanc: An Unsung Hero
/Sea Bream & Fig Tartare with a bottle of Cassis Blanc. An entirely new experience for me...my first ever bottle of wine from the Cassis Appellation. Which turned out to be a heavenly match for my first taste of Dorada Tartare
The raw fish just melts in the mouth & surprisingly isn't over sweetened by the figs Cassis AOC is a tiny appellation, just east of Marseille, in the Provence region of France. Surprisingly Cassis specialises in white wines rather than the extremely fashionable pale rosés of its more illustrious neighbours.
These fuller bodied, dry whites are usually a blend of Marsanne, Clairette, Saivignon Blanc & Ugni Blanc grape varieties. Sadly I don't know anything about this producer but it's a gorgeous wine Served only slightly chilled, potentially not on purpose but it was perfect.
Floral and exotic on the nose, although fresh it has a lower acidity than I've to come to expect from Provence whites. I love the slightly waxy, weighty mouthfeel & it's solid length.
It reminds a little of a quality dry Riesling & certainly worth a try if you're in Provence, as I imagine it's not widely exported, the French do like to keep the good stuff for themselves
