Feteasca Neagra: Unsung Hero?

Discovered a brand new grape variety today.   I've been in the wine trade for 8 years now & it's safe to say I've never heard of let alone tasted the red grape Feteasca Neagra, but you know what....it drinks rather well.

This modern wine with a modern label is sold in ASDA supermarkets, in the UK, for about £6, but you would easily be forgiven for thinking it was a new world wine rather than hailing from the historic vineyards of Romania.

A native grape of Romania this particular wine is produced by Cramele Recas from the western fringes of the Transylvania/Banay region. With no oak influence It's a medium bodied red wine, very soft & fruity, packed full of blackcurrent but with still a slightly savoury, peppery, flavour. It went perfectly with the steak & peppercorn sauce but I reckon it will happily stand up on it's own as a drinking wine.

I find it so refreshing that there are still great value wines on the market that I've still not yet discovered. Even if you can't find this particular wine I thoroughly recommend seeking out some Cramele Recas wines. I've just tasted most of their range from value to premium & they're not just interesting wines, they're quality wines to.
