Meerlust Rubicon 2003
/Tonight's wine for a BYO restaurant is Meerlust Rubicon 2003. Had the same vintage 5 years ago when I bought them... Looking forward to seeing how well it's aged.
This is one of THE top wines from South Africa, produced in the much famed Stellenbosch region. The Rubicon is named after the Rubicon river, the historic border of Ancient Rome.
Last year I was lucky enough to meet the winemaker as he was in the UK for the release of their new vintage. He pooped into my shop and we tasted their Merlot alongside the 2008 Rubicon.
He assured me that my last bottle of the 2003 vintage will go on for another decade but I couldn't resist. Tonight seemed like a good night to confuse a few wine professionals.
Ir worked a treat! When tasted blind the consensus was that we were enjoying a mid aged classed growth from the left bank of Bordeaux, or maybe even a 10 year Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon. I think that is testament to the quality of this unforgettable wine.
I mentioned the fact that I've tried the 2008 because it was a completely different beast. Once again a lottle bit of maturation in the bottle makes all the difference. It has softened out so much, becom silky smooth and packed full of ripe dark cherry and blackcurrant.
I can relate to my friend who suggested an Aussie Cab as there is a smidgen of menthol in the nose but other than that it could easily pass for a premium Bordeaux...but thankfully it's much more interesting! We all love the fruit but also the earthy, tobacco tones which come through on the finish.
In conclusion I think this is well worth a try, what with the South African Rand being what it is this Meerlust is a veritable bargain. A wine that can easily be mistaken for a one 5 times in price so if you see it on a wine list get involved.
