CNDP Barbe Rac' 2003

Gotta love a blind fine wine night. With the skillful use of stripy sock any wine can be a blind wine. With free corkage at the restaurant we decided to line up all of the 'sock wines' on the table and try guess what was what.

Admittedly we received a number of curiously bemused looks from the other diners but after the first few glasses we really didn't mind the attention.

One of the hardest wines of the night was a rare bottle of  Chateauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac' 2003.

It has a very small production and is a 100% Grenache Chateauneuf-du-pape from Chapoutier. SO much so that I've never come across this before.

Seriously smokey & intensely fruity, it could easily be mistaken for an Aussie Grenache, with very subtle tannins...went perfectly with my Venison...a true belter of a wine!
