Albertines Wine Bar: Craiglee Shiraz 2000

I came across this little gem of Shiraz in one of my favourite London wine bars; Albertines in Shepherd's Bush. They have an eclectic and extensive wine list which caters for the novice and the keen wine enthusiast. With back vintages and lesser know appellations available to drink in or take away.

If you get a chance to have a chat with the owner, Albert, you wont be disappointed. He is full of useful information about all types of wines and really knows his wine list inside out.

After one such discussion I discovered that he had bought a case of this Craiglee Shiraz 2000, from Sunbury Victoria, back in 2003.  At the time the quality and potential was in evidence but the wine was practically undrinkable.  It was too big, a real monster. So he tucked the case way and hoped for the best, and thankfully I'm happy to say his patience has really paid off.

The age makes all the difference, back then the style of Australian wines was to be over powering, producers were searching for intensity and power. Now this wine has softened it's alcohol is in perfect balance with its ripe fruit and acidity.  Packed full of black cherry, with hints of sweet spice and vanilla present, soft tannins & a velvety smooth finish that lingers forever.

This is what Shiraz can be and at only £44 in a wine bar it is veritable bargain.  I'm so pleased to have found this wine and so were my friends, with two of them saying it was the best wine they've ever tasted!
